Aish Movie Online Review

Written by Gobi on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 10:25 PM

Story :
Aisha Kapoor (Sonam Kapoor) is the quintessential uptown girl from super rich South Delhi. She's smart, sassy and intelligent and spends her time with usual cosmo concerns: animal rights, art exhibitions, weekend getaways, polo matches, shopaholic sprees....But more than all this, her pet obsession seems to be matchmaking.

After having found a suitable match for her aunt, she now wants to pair off her newfound friend, downmarket, small town-ish Shefali Tiwari (Amrita Puri), to Randhir Gambhir (Cyrus Sahukar), the man who actually is all eyes for Aisha alone. But before she can do that, she must transform the Haryanvi behenji into an uber chic style diva like herself. Indeed, a difficult project that gets even more tough because childhood buddy, Arjun Burman (Abhay Deol), seems hell-bent on scuttling all her `new projects' and censuring her `social work' as meddlesome mess. Does Arjun's opinion actually matter? Are marriages made in heaven? Can love be stage-managed? Good questions!

Review :
Take a back bench, Carrie Bradshaw and Co. Indian movielore has its own city slicker chicks who are definitely sweeter, sexier and more svelte than all of the Sex and the City girlie brigade put together. What's more important is the fact that their concerns are soooooo recognisable, ekdum familiar, and absolutely rib-tickling. So much so, they strike an instant chord with any and everybody -- chick and chico -- who has undergone the metropolitan mating game, complete with its distinct social divide between the two distinct types: the uptown dudes and dudettes and the downtown behenjis and bhaiyyas!

Producer Rhea Kapoor and director Rajshree Ojha's Aisha is a charmer for so many reasons. First and foremost, the film completely dazzles you with its style quotient. Truly, this must be one of the most exquisitely crafted films to sashay down Bollywood's boulevard in the non-action genre (we've had a lot of stylish action films, beginning with Satya). Every bit of costume, every incidental accessory and every tone of colour has been carefully co-ordinated to create a never-ending canvas that reminds you of a walk in a museum, brimming over with objects d 'arts. From Manish Arora, Anamika Khanna to Chanel and Ralph Lauren, Aisha and her friends just leave you gurgling with glee as they balance the bizarre with the beautiful. And yet, this fashion extravaganza never seems like a hollow catwalk. Kudos to stylist Pernia Qureshi and costume designer Kunal Rawal who create a whole new aesthetics for desi cinema. It's extremely difficult translating the aesthetics of an Austen novel on to the big screen, something which auteur director Ang Lee successfully managed in Sense and Sensibility. But when you try and translate Austen's early 19th century England into saddi Dilli and Manhattan-like Mumbai, it's got to be tricky. But hey, no hiccups for our stylists here. The transition is silken and smooth.

But the style quotient works only because the girls are such strong flesh and blood characters and carry it off so beautifully. Sonam Kapoor's super snob and spoilt brattish Aisha is actually quite adorable, even as Ira Dubey's best friend act as Pinky Bose stands out with its supercilious splendour. The duo are absolutely riveting as they breathe life into the archetypal `super bi**ches' who, if you scratch the glossy surface, are gooey and good-hearted go-getters too. They too have the same fears and the same dreams as the simpleton, Shefali who falls into their trap and becomes their latest victim and pastime. In a seminal scene, the three girls put their heads together, wonder and giggle whether they will have to die single. Sweet! Add to this the fourth diva, New-York returned, white-collared, corporate yuppie, Aarti (Lisa Haydon) and you have a female foursome that literally carries the film on its fair and fragile shoulders.

But all this womanly business doesn't leave the men behind in any way. All the male characters have substance and soul, including Sonam's dahling of a dad (MK Raina) who first berates her on her exorbitant credit card bill and then later, shares a bowl of gajar ka halwa with her while dishing out some delicious homilies on love and life. Leading the men's brigade of course is Abhay Deol who creates Jane Austen's Mr Knightley to Sonam's Emma Woodhouse with an irresistible charm that is all his dimpled own. Completely in command, charmingly censorious and so much in love, he's the essence of Austen's heroes. But the rest of the boys -- Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh and Anand Tiwari -- aren't far behind.

Watch out also for Javed Akhtar's and Amit Trivedi's peppy music track which sends you out humming `gal mitthi mitthi bol', as you savour your money's worth.

Sweet love, substantial performances, super fun, slick 'n stylish, Aisha is a-ha stuff.

I Hate Luv Storys - Review

Written by Gobi on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 2:57 AM

Cast: Imran Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Sameer Dattani, Sameer Soni, Bruna Abdulla, Ketaki Dave, Anju Mahendroo

Director:
Punit Malhotra

The first thing that attracts you to I Hate Luv Storys is its title. Let's face it, we adore love stories... at least I do. We idolise the characters decades after the movies have come and gone. The songs that come on our lips instantly while playing a game of antakshri are romantic songs as well. In fact, the biggest moneyspinners, let's face it, have been love stories, right? So how can we 'hate' a love story?

No matter how mushy or cheesy they are, we find love stories irresistible because of the tremendous rush we experience at the end. Some of us are big suckers for love sagas, aren't we? That's precisely the reason why this title (I Hate Luv Storys) nagged me no end every time I watched the promo of this film.

Helmed by first-timer Punit Malhotra, I Hate Luv Storys is aypical candyfloss romance with a story that's not jaw-droppingly different, let me forewarn you. But if you're young at heart or a diehard and hopeless romantic, you'd lap up I Hate Luv Storys like a kid laps up his fav candy.

Now to the vital question: If I Hate Luv Storys rests on a thin plot, what is it that drives the film for the next two hours? My answer to that is, four factors: The fresh pairing and chemistry between the lead cast, tremendous youth appeal, terrific music and magical moments that make a love story work.

Final word? The makers have never claimed that I Hate Luv Storys will change the face of Hindi cinema. Nor did they ever claim that I Hate Luv Storys will change the mindset of the viewer towards romantic films. So let's sit back and enjoy the fun ride. This one's by the youth, for the youth. It's this age-group that would come out smiling, cheering and rooting for this prem kahani.

'I hate love stories' is the maxim Jay (Imran Khan) lives by. But as an assistant director to Veer (Samir Soni), the most famous romantic film-maker of Indian film industry, Jay has little option but to live with larger than life, glossy, cinematic love on an everyday basis. Things only get worse when he is made to work under the new production designer on the film, Simran (Sonam Kapoor), with whom he shares the strangest first encounter.

Simran loves love stories, so much so that even her life has begun to resemble one. With her ideal job and the perfect boyfriend Raj (Samir Dattani), she lives a blissful, dreamy life. One that is rudely interrupted by Jay's cynicism.

Writer-director Punit Malhotra wins Round 1 by casting the right actors in the roles of Jay and Simran. In fact, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that the casting is the trump card of this film. But what Punit ought to know by now is that every story ought to have a strong grip to keep your attention arrested for the next two hours. In this case, the film rests on a waferthin plot, with not much movement in the story in the first hour. In fact, the story barely moves in the first part.

Yes, post-interval, the story does gather momentum and though you're well aware of the journey and what the culmination will be like, you don't mind the ride because you can't take your eyes off Imran and Sonam. Also, a love story works if one pines for the on-screen lovers and in I Hate Luv Storys, you genuinely want the duo to sort things out, which means that you're involved in their lives. Even the finale - it won't be fair on my part to reveal how this movie concludes - may be filmy or cliched, but let's face it, it works.

Let me draw parallels with another love story, also starring Imran Khan. Recall the finale of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, which had Imran riding a horse to reach his sweetheart (Genelia) at the airport. I distinctly recall, a lot of people found the end bizzare and rightly so. Can you imagine anyone galloping to the international airport in Mumbai? But I was truly surprised when I learnt that the youth were whistling and clapping all through. The finale is different here (no horses, please) and you exit the auditorium with a smile on your face.

Director Punit Malhotra is heavily inspired by Mills & Boon novels and several Bollywood films... love stories all. But like I pointed out earlier, Punit needs to polish his writing skills, although the director in him bails the writer out and takes the film to a different level. The sequences between Imran and Sonam are well penned, but the ones between Sonam and her parents or Sonam and Samir Dattani are half-baked. Directorially, Punit shows super-confidence in moulding the two actors in their respective parts, so much so that you get sucked into Jay and Simran's world after a while.

Raavan even worse than Kites

Written by Gobi on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 2:49 AM

Till just a few days back, the industry was smiling with the blockbuster success of Raajneeti. However, the smiles have vanished all over again with Raavan turning out to be disaster at the box office. Wait, before we delve into the box office fate of the film, let's also talk about the film by itself. The fact remains that this Mani Ratnam

directed film is disastrous even from the content and execution perspective. Certain films have good content but get marred by poor execution. Some films have a decent execution but the script doesn't contain much meat to take them through. However, when the combination of both these factors turns out to be poor, there is nothing that can salvage the situation.

This is what happened in case of Raavan where the coming together of names like Mani Ratnam, Aishwarya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, A.R. Rahman, Gulzar and Big Pictures just couldn't help the cause. The film received poor all around response. Audience, industry folks, trade and critics - there was just no liking for this extravagant affair that was strong only from its technical perspective. Worse, for all its claims of originality, Raavan was nothing but the coming together of Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak and Ram Gopal Varma's Jungle. Though both these films were entertaining, Raavan wasn't and it showed in the box office collections.

As predicted last week, a good opening was never on the cards for Raavan. It was stated that the film would require at least 70% opening and sustained word of mouth to do anything worthwhile at the box office. However, as it turned out, Raavan had a below average opening of 50% across the country and that is now staring at the bottom of the barrel due to an out and out negative word of mouth. Few lovers of art can still be seen patronising the film, but sadly such numbers are miniscule.

The way Raavan is currently performing, it is all set to score far less than the last big budgeted disaster - Kites. The Hrithik Roshan starrer had managed a very good opening weekend (30 crores) for itself despite poor word of mouth and reviews. However, for Raavan it would indeed be a task to reach the 30 crores mark even after the completion of one full week, with less than 20 crores coming in after the closure of first weekend. Moreover, from second week onwards it is only expected to go further downhill despite no competition.

All in all, yet another sad outing for Abhishek Bachchan after Delhi-6 as both the films were placed entirely on his shoulders. As for Aishwarya Bachchan, she would now have to look forward to the release of Action Replayy and Guzaarish to hunt for that elusive hit.

Raavan online movie review

Written by Gobi on Monday, June 21, 2010 at 1:48 AM

Cast: Vikram,Abhishek Bachchan,Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Director :
Mani Ratnam

Music:A.R

Inspiration: The film is a modern day, revisionist adaptation of the epic, Ramayana.

Story:
Cop Dev Pratap Sharma (Vikram) has just one mission in his life. He wants to capture the local outlaw, Beera (Abhishek Bachchan) who may be a Robin Hood for the tribals around, nevertheless, he is a law breaker. More importantly, he has kidnapped the cop's beautiful wife, Ragini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) to avenge a personal grouse and has escaped into the dense jungles. Turn ofevents: the kidnapper falls in love with his trophy victim who too gets indecisive about where her loyalties lie....

Movie Review: The epics return again to contemporary cinema. After a re-telling of the Mahabharata against a political backdrop in Prakash Jha's Raajneeti, cineastes can now feast their eyes on a modern-day rewrite of the Ramayana, against a cops-and-robbers canvas.

Feast? Yes. The high point of Mani Ratnam's film is primarily its visual opulence. The film is literally a work of art where one luminescent frame follows another as the scenes keep shifting from one wet and rocky landscape to another misty mountainscape. You can't seem to get enough of the montages that leave you breathless with the excellent camera artistry by Santosh Sivan and Manikandan. From the opening sequences where Beera (Abhishek) smashes his boat into wide-eyed Aishwarya's canoe, to the fleeing, flinging, fulminating visage of Aishwarya, captured against wild waterfalls, turbulent tidal rivers, crumbling trees and silken drizzle, the film is a string of breath taking images. So much so, you seem to forget -- and almost forgive -- the fact that the first half hardly has any story. It is essentially just one prolonged chase, where cop Dev (Vikram) relentlessly pursues criminal Beera (Abhishek Bachchan) in order to rescue his wife (Ragini) and book the fugitive who garners great local support.

"It shows that I am nude" - Neetu Chandra

Written by Gobi on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 1:43 AM

Neetu Chandra has done a bathing scene in Jagmohan Mundhra's Apartment which is reminiscent of Smita Patil's 'bathing in the slums' scene in Chakra. Although that was an outdoor shot, this one is inside a bathroom. Neetu talks about the daring scene. Read on...

Your first reaction on learning about the bathing scene?
When Jagmohan was narrating the script to me he had said the bathing scene might be an option but if I decided to shoot it, he would present it aesthetically and allow me to call the shots. He added that if I didn't like the scene or had a problem with the way it looked afterward, it was my call to have it edited out.

Did you ensure that least number of people were present when you shot the scene?
Yes. The only people present were Jag sir, cameraman Uday Tiwari, my assistant and the EP Krishna Banerjee.

Were you awkward or uncomfortable?
I went about it very professionally. Initially, I was nervous but later, after seeing the scene and the way it was shot, I am confident it will go down well. They also showed me Tanushree's shower scene with Rohit in her lavish apartment and then there is my bathing scene in a run-down broken bathroom. I am sure there will be comparisons.

Have you seen Smita Patil's Chakra bathing scene? Might be comparisons to that too.
I knew that Smita Patil had done a similar bathing scene in Chakra. I have been compared to Smitaji since Traffic Signal but it's not fair to be compared to anyone. She was a legend. We all look up to her. If I can be even one per cent of what she was, my life is set.

Were you really bare, as it seems in the photograph?
Well it shows that I am nude but I don't want to comment beyond that. It can be a trick of the camera too. Do you think any actress would pose for a scene like this without wearing anything?

Does your family know about your nude scene?
My family knows me very well and they also know that I am only answerable to my work and nobody else. I take my own decisions.

What's Apartment about?
It's a contemporary thriller set in an apartment where two people live. I play a girl from a small town who loses her mind when she come to the big city and tries to settle down.

Paiya Movie Review Online: “Paiya’ is an urban story and tells the interesting events happening in the lives of a pair of lovers (Karthi and Tamanna). Besides, Milind Soman and Sonia Deepti are playing pivotal roles. The movie was widely shot in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Paiya is all set to hit the screens on April 2nd Worldwide. Paiya stars Karthik Shivakumar and Tamanna in the lead roles. Music is scored by mass Yuvan Shankar Raja.

The suspense element is when an unknown person joins their three days journey and unexpected twists and interesting things, happen during the journey.

The flashback of this movie is another key element which has been screened in a very colourful way.

A song “Suthudhey Suthudhey Boomi”, choreographed by Sabeena Khan, is expected to be one of the highlights of the movie. It was shot at Prasad Studios in Chennai, where a grand set was erected by art director Rajeevan.

However, thanks to computer graphics and visual effects, the background of the song will change to dense forests and lush mountain ranges, it is said. A rain song “Adada Mazhaida”, featuring Karthi and Tamanna, was shot at the Athirappilly waterfalls recently.

Get ready to watch the stylish, romantic, thriller ‘Paiya’ in 70 MM screen. Do watch the movie on theater and enjoy the full fun of entertainment. I’m eager to watch the Paiya movie and hope you all will enjoy the movie.

Salman Khan's jail life on big screen

Written by Gobi on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 2:06 AM

Films based on real life incidents is not new in Bollywood but a film on actor Salman Khan's jail life will be different all together. The latest news is that Ranjit Sharma is making a film titled Qaidi No 210, based on actor's stay in the jail in connection to the infamous chinkara case.

Mahesh Kumar Saini, who spent three days with Salman in Jodhpur Central Jail in 1996, has provided enough information to Ranjit about the actor. Ranjit said that he met Mahesh, a murder suspect, while researching on the subject and asked him to contact him once he is released from the jail. He added that Salman's cellmate has given details about the actor.

Mahesh is all praise for Salman, saying that he was the nicest man he has ever met and was sure that he was innocent as far as chinkara case is concerned. He is not willing to reveal whatever Salman said but he is sure that the actor did not fire that shot. He claimed that Salman was addicted to coffee and needed a cup of it every hour, and ate nothing in the cell but the chocolates his brother Sohail had given him.

Recounting the days he spent with Salman, he said that the actor ate soyabean he prepared on the second night. They managed to bring dumb bells into the cell for work out though it's not allowed. Mahesh revealed that he arranged a carrom board and a chess board for him, as he was bored. He added that the actor offered to give him Rs.20,000 as a token of his appreciation but he had asked him to find him a job instead once he is released.

Soundarya Rajinikanth in trouble again!

Written by Gobi on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 3:35 AM

Anil Ambani's Reliance Media Works has filed a case against Soundarya Rajinikanth’s Ocher Studios (OS) to get back their of Rs 11.59 cr that invested for Rajini starrer animation film Sultan the Warrior.

According to the case, Reliance Media Works had signed a contract with OS, way back in January 2008 to jointly produce Sultan- The Warrior, an animated film featuring Superstar Rajinikanth, and was slated for release in April 2009. RMW after terminating its contract with Ocher in June 2009, failed to recover dues worth Rs 11.59 Crore and has now filed a suit against the company.

And when RMW came to know that OS is planning to release Sultan- The Warrior, in June 2010, they moved to Madras High Court on February 16 to restrain them from 'releasing, exhibiting, marketing or distributing' the film without settling their dues together with an interest of 12 percent per annum!

The case is now scheduled to come up for hearing on March 29. But Latha Rajinikanth, the Chairman of Ocher says that they are trying to settle the issue outside the court.

Love Sex Aur Dhokha gets adult certificate

Written by Gobi on at 2:45 AM

Dibakar Banerjee’s much talked-about Love Sex Aur Dhokha went before the censor board recently. The controversial love scene showing a bare-backed girl on top of a man, making love, has been told to be blurred on screen.

In other words, Dibakar’s couple will be seen by the audience making love as two blurred figures.

The director, already miffed and mired in what he sees as unnecessary controversy, refuses to be enraged even if so many recent Hindi films have had graphic love-making scenes. As for the female bare back during a love-making scene, the censors liberally allowed that in Rensil D’Silva’s Kurbaan just recently!

Says Dibakar, “We had submitted a DVD of the film to the Censor Board so they’d recommend cuts in advance and avoid delays. The censor preview recommendation suggests that we blur the sex scene. We were told this scene was too graphic and needed tempering. There’s no way the censors could allow the love-making scene. We’ve clearly been told that even before the film is submitted for censoring.”

When asked how bare-backed love-making scenes have been allowed by the censors recently and how the one in Love Sex Aur Dhokha (LSD) has been asked to tone down even before the film is submitted to the censors, the director chooses to smile mysteriously.

“I’ve been, in principle, against the film being perceived as a voyeur’s delight. Love Sex Aur Dhokha is not about sex sex and sex. Those who expect that will turn away disappointed.”

However, in another more radical cut, all reference to caste in a love story between a low-caste boy and a high-caste girl has been removed by the Censor Board. This has infuriated Dibakar. Says the director, “This completely changes the perspective of my story since now the caste-challenged love story is turned into a poor-boy-rich-girl romance. This is not what I intended.”

Also, the song “Tu Nangi Acchhi Lagti Hai”, which was modified on the audio cd to “Tu Gandi Achchi Lagti Hai”, has now been similarly modified in the film also.

Says Dibakar, “But no complaints. Considering the controversial content, my film got away easily with little cuts and an ‘Adults’ certificate.”

Mandira Bedi ends her innings in IPL

Written by Gobi on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 5:34 AM

Watching cricket on small screens will not be the same anymore. The girl, who transformed cricket commentary a few years ago, is going to make way for younger people. We are talking about the one and only Mandira Bedi.
Yes, Mandira will not be seen when the third edition of the Indian Premier League T-20 cricket tournament begins this Friday. Max has roped in Samir Kochar, Gaurav Kapur, Ayushman Khurana and Angad Bedi this time around.

Sneha Rajani, executive vice-president of SET Max, confirmed that she won't be there, as they are trying out something different. Sources said that people in Max think Mandira has lost her screen appeal. Mandira also confirmed that she wouldn't host the IPL for Max.

Mandira is known more for her television stint than her films. She created quite a stir a few years ago by hosting Extraa Innings programme with Charu Sharma at the Cricket World Cup. She also received lots of flak for wearing a sari with flags of all the nations that participated in the World Cup. However, she turned a sensation soon after. And now, it will be difficult to think of watching any major cricket match without her.

The fact is you can't beat Mandira in her own game, as she is a blend of beauty, glamour and charm. Of course she has fair knowledge of the cricket game. Mandira's fans will surely miss her!

Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? Movie Review Online

Written by Gobi on at 2:13 AM

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Konkona Sen Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Satish Kaushik, Sanjay Mishra, Akhilendra Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari and Viju Khote

Director: Ashwni Dhir

Music Director: Pritam

First Bollywood venture of famous Hollywood Studio Warner Brothers, “Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge” is releasing today, 5th March. Directed by Ashwni Dhir and produce by Amita Pathak, the movie is ready to recreate the magic of clean and simple comedy of 70s era.

The story of the movie revolves around a married couple Puneet (Ajay Devgn) and Munmun (Konkona Sen Sharma) who lives in Mumbai. There life changes when their distant relative, Chachaji (Paresh Rawal) steps into their house from village. The overstaying of guest frustrates the couple and situation becomes more comic when they make plans to throw Chachaji out of their house.

Performance wise Paresh Rawal outshines every actor. He portrays the real and raw character traits of an old villager and his habit of producing bad gas adds humor in every scene. Ajay and Konkona are impressive in their respective roles.

The story of the movie by Robin Bhatt and Tushar Hiranandani is well written, except some parts which look unnecessary. But the story does remind us of the classy movies of brilliant directors like Hrishikesh Mukerjee and Basu Bhattacharya.
Director Ashwni Dhir has done a good job. He has successfully depicted the plight of middle class family who lives in a metro and is unable to bear such a guest who is not willing to go anywhere and loves to enjoy his position.

Ashwni Dhir has written hilarious and rib tickling dialogues. The cinematography by Aseem Bajaj is very impressive.

Though the music of the movie by Pritam is not so catchy but it goes well with the situations of the movie especially the devotional song.

The other cast includes Satish Kaushik who is as usual unforgettable. Sanjay Mishra is quite impressive in his role. Akhilendra Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari and Viju Khote are also good.

Altogether “Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge” is sensible, clean and lighthearted comedy that is a full family entertainer
. It is a worth watching film.

No Shahid-Kareena show for now

Written by Gobi on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 1:10 AM

Boney Kapoor has apparently decided to postpone the release of his five-year-old Milenge Milenge (with Kareena Kapoor) because his hero Shahid Kapoor has requested it.

No blasts from past
It is learnt that Shahid is keen that his upcoming releases are not blasts from the past. He doesn't want to dilute the high Kaminey gave him, by following it up with a dabbe ka picture (as films long in the making are popularly called in B-Town).

Pehle yeh...
Shahid wants his buddy Ahmed Khan's Paathshaala and Yash Raj Films' Badmaash Company to release first. Shahid feels that Paathshaala has shaped out well and could be his Taare Zameen Par.
Milenge Milenge has been in the making for years and he is convinced that if it releases before the new films, it could mar his popularity. Boney has now postponed his film from April 2 this year to an indefinite date. He is expected to announce the release date in the coming week."

You decide...
Boney says, "Yes. I have postponed Milenge Milenge from April 2 and Shahid did tell me to postpone the film as he felt that for three films to release at the same time would make all suffer and also cut into the promotional events but he also said that the final decision is mine."

Music video
Boney adds that he also pushed the release ahead for other reasons, "We have recorded a new song, Sab Kuch Khatam Hokar Bhi by Himesh Reshammiya. It's probably Himesh's best song and Shahid was very excited when he heard it. He was very excited about the song and said this could be the surprise of the film. He's agreed to shoot the music video. Now I need to ask Kareena."

Sitting on a winner
Boney says that Bebo is willing to promote the film. "This could be something exciting if the two of them decide to promote MM together. In fact, after Bebo finished dubbing she asked the team why we were holding back the release, because she thought we are sitting on a winner."

According to Boney, another reason the film has been delayed is the music company T-Series. "When I played the new soundtrack to Bhushan Kumar, he said that the music is exceptional and would need a six-week window to promote and do justice to it. I have to respect the person who is investing so much into my film. I have been showing promos to different people and everyone is saying that they are looking fresh and fantastic."

But in a weak moment, Karthik makes the mistake and reveals about the calls to Shonali. He not only stops at that but on Shonali’s insistence avoids picking up further calls. What hell is unleashed on Karthik by the mysterious caller and how Karthik faces his demons forms the rest of the film.

A very hatke concept, Karthik Calling Karthik (KCK) has been stylishly shot like a taut Hollywood thriller. Keeping you much intrigued with what will happen next, the film is a good exercise of the guessing game but up to the last twenty minutes. It derails big time in the closing reels. Since it’s a suspense thriller much can’t be revealed at this point. Certain cinematic liberties taken and a disappointingly predictable climax loosen the final impact. The much needed climax punch is sorely missing. The revelation though interesting doesn’t give you that, “Oh I didn’t know this was coming” feeling! But these things apart KCK is a good one time watch for many reasons. Debutante director Vijay Lalwani shows terrific spark and more can be expected from his future projects. The cinematography, background score by Medieval Punditz and Karsh Kale enhance the thrill. The art direction deserves special mention. The dialogues are very good, in fact the intelligent one-liners will have you in splits.

Farhan Akhtar is only improving as an actor with each passing film. Just when you saw him confidently portray a self assured character in his first two films, in here he oscillates well between playing a meek guy and a super confident person. Deepika fits the part perfectly. They both make an unusually cute pair. Vivan Bathena and Ram Kapoor are aptly cast. Shefali Shah is good in the three scenes that she gets.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s music is already ruling the charts and is superbly incorporated in the film with the song numbers being well shot. Karthik Calling Karthik could have been better had there been a cracker of a climax but nonetheless, it’s a good film that deserves one viewing at least.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya Review | Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya Movie Review

Written by Gobi on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 12:30 AM

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is a Tamil film directed by Gautham Menon. Starring Silambarasan Rajendar and Trisha Krishnan.

The music is given by A. R. Rahman, teaming up with both Gautham Menon and Silambarasan, released on 26 February 2010.

The film is simultaneously made in Telugu as Ye Maaya Chesave.

The film was shot in many picturesque locations including the beautiful Malta islands near Italy and various locations in the U.S.A including New York City, and various scenic spots in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The movie has been slated for a February 26 release.

Gowtham Vasudev Menon walked away with laurels aplenty after his over the board debut with Minnale

The ace director’s latest flick Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya (VV) too is alleged to be churned out on the same lines and speaks about an ambitious assistant director Karthik (Silambarasan) wanting to make it big as a filmmaker. But things take an unexpected turn when he falls in love with a Jessie (Trisha); he’s ready to sacrifice his biggest dreams.

Though much hasn’t been divulged about this breezy romantic entertainer, sources reveal that Trisha flies to the US and much like Surya in Vaaranam Aayiram, Simbhu, the assistant director in the film, sets aboard a voyage in pursuit of his love.

For those who’ve already had enough of watching the young rough Silambarasan muttering ‘punch’ dialogues and man-handling 50 men at the same time, here’s something that promises to be unusual of Simbu

Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai Movie Review

Written by Gobi on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 5:13 AM

With couple of his previous films yielding him lukewarm responses at box office, actor Vishal had seemingly changed his mind to take up unique scripts. Of course, he has stepped out of clichéd formulas and has picked a romantic entertainer.

‘Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai’ is about a well educated guy Karthik (Vishal) who wants everything best in his life. Be it a small pen or a shirt, he wants every aspect to be perfect. Similarly, he sets out about falling in love with three girls at the same time and plans to choose one amongst them.

He comes across Priya (Sarah Jane), a girl who believes in pathi parameshwar concept, i.e. about falling in love with a person and marrying him. On pars, there’s Jyothi (Tanushree Dutta), who always has a hatred for all guys and then it’s Tejashwini (Neethu Chandra), one of the hot and happening millionaires in town.On the process of wooing them down, these gals indeed fall in love with him. Now, he’s completely pitted into unexpected troubles as it comes to choosing one amongst them…

Vishal looks pretty decorous with his well-chosen costumes and carries his role well with perfection. Neethu Chandra offers a grand fiesta of glamorous quotients while Tanushree Dutta has a good establishment of her characterization and later gets diminished in course of time. Sarah Jane makes it appealingly blissful with her performance as a cute and lovable girl. However, Neetu Chandra gets more footage throughout the film and keeps getting on well. Santhanam adds to the humor quotients with his rib-tickling comedy tracks, especially in the first hour.

Prakash Raj doesn’t get more scope as he appears not more than 3 scenes.Yuvan Shankar Raja could’ve done a fine job as only couple of songs sound well. Cinematography by Aravind Krishna is excellent while art works and choreography add more colors to the visual quotients. The first half of the movie goes enjoyable while the second half is completely contrastive with a longer duration and more predictable parts.

With Sun Pictures promoting the film with greater magnitude, ‘Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai’ is sure to make it big in box office for next couple of months. And finally, we mark our verdicts that the film is aptly for ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres while the multiplex audiences may not have a great likeliness for this film.

My Name is Khan: Movie Review

Written by Gobi on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 12:56 AM

My name is khan movie review, SRK My Name Is Khan gets rousing response across the nation. Despite far right Shiv Sena’s threats Shah Rukh Khan’s film My Name Is Khan opened with a spectacular show across India. Many trade observers said that it was a great opening for a film of this sort.

Despite the contradictory signals from Shiv Sena, the Hindutva party from Maharashtra that has lost much of its influence in the last few years and found this issue to give it good highlight in national and vernacular media, the enthusiasm for the film was great.

From Bangalore to New Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad, besides all other big and small cities and towns, the film opened to full house.

In fact in Delhi it was impossible for anyone to get hold of the ticket. In almost all the cinema houses showing the film, the theatres were hundred percent booked for the next four days.

Many said that even Aamir Khan’s film Three Idiot didn’t had such an spectacular run on the first day of the show.

Many reviewers have already dubbed it as the best Shah Rukh khan movie ever saying that this is the first film where despite being a Khan he is not looking a Shah Rukh Khan.

He is a consummate love song type actor who repeats same sorts of roles in every film with slight difference, but here he is playing the character of a Muslim who is being hounded post 9/11.

In the meantime Despite Shiv Sena threats more than a dozen cinema halls showed the movie and all the shows were housefull.

This must be a big slap on both cheeks of Shiv Sena’s …….

But alas the film that is shot on a US theme and in US itself may not get many audiences there. A Guardian report rightly sums it up, “It's stunningly shot, on mostly US locations, and tackles plenty of hard topics – its deceptively light touch gets heavier as things progress. It's a shame that much of the intended audience will not see this well-intentioned, slickly constructed and just plain likable film, for reasons that are very little to do with the film itself.”

The most-awaited film of the year, Rakesh Roshan’s Kites, will be releasing its two-and-a-half-minute promo along with the prints of My Name Is Khan on February 12.

The team, which should be anticipating the audience’s reaction to the promo that shows Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori’s love story in the film and even has a kissing scene, is instead worried over something else. The promo leaked somehow and was put up on popular video sharing website, Youtube.

The video was made and sent to 20th Century Fox’s office in the US so that it could be released along with My Name Is Khan. But everyone was in for a shock when the promos were posted online. They are now in the process of removing the videos as they don’t want the freshness to die.

Striker Movie Review

Written by Gobi on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 2:49 AM

Some stories seem very interesting on paper. You get hooked, perhaps captivated. But there are times when these stories lose sheen when translated on celluloid. As a storyteller, you need to have the convincing power to keep the viewer hooked. Also, you ought to know when and how to conclude the story. Like they say, never stretch a story beyond a point.

Striker, directed by Chandan Arora, falters because the story doesn't arrest your attention in entirety and also, it seems like a never-ending ride, even though the running time is approx. 2 hours. Frankly, the story overstays its welcome.

Cinema is all about narrating stories and Chandan Arora makes a sincere attempt to narrate one in Striker, but the multiple tracks and layers in the film act as a spoilsport. The screenplay is patchy and the focus shifts from one episode to another constantly. It's not sacrilegious to have multiple tracks in a film, but you need to conclude each track before the actual story reaches its culmination. Clearly, the screenplay writing lets Striker down.

Also, the subject material is very Mumbai-centric and therefore, will appeal to a miniscule audience. Final word? The Striker doesn't strike! Set in a Mumbai ghetto in the mid 80s, Surya [Siddharth] grows up with few luxuries. Poor health
keeps him away from school often and that is when his elder brother, Chandrakant [Anoop Soni], introduces him to carrom.

Hopes for a job in Dubai replaces the passion for carrom as Surya grows into a young man. Duped by a bogus overseas employment agency, Surya loses his hard earned money he had saved for going to Dubai. Surya is forced to cross paths with Jaleel [Aditya Pancholi]. Reintroduced to carrom by his childhood friend Zaid [Ankur Vikal], Surya starts playing again. Being robbed of his hard earned money by the same man who had caused misery for many families, Surya decides to take on Jaleel on his turf.

First things first. Even though Striker attempts to narrate the story of a carrom player, depicting the highs and lows in his life, the question is, does it have recall value after the show has concluded? The game of carrom being used for gambling may sound interesting and Chandan Arora should've stuck to the core issue, instead of drifting into multi-tracks.

Like, for instance, the romance - between Siddharth and his neighbour - is concluded abruptly. The girl disappears suddenly after her father spots Siddharth and her in the train. But pray why? Naah, no explanations are offered. Ditto for Anupam Kher's character. He seems hell-bent on putting an end to Aditya Pancholi's reign of terror, but when Kher comes face to face with Pancholi, all he does is play an intermediary between Pancholi and his arch rival, whom Pancholi assumes had betrayed him.

The track between Siddharth and Padma Priya, a fisher woman, seems forced in the screenplay. Even the finale - the death of his sister [Vidya Malvade] and brother-in-law during communal riots and the subsequent fight-to-finish with Pancholi - looks unreal, when the film seems to be following a realistic pattern.

Chandan Arora's choice of the story is right, but the erratic screenplay writing will cost him dear. However, there's no denying that he has handled a number of individualistic scenes well. The music [multiple music composers] is soothing. P.S. Vinod's cinematography is perfect.

Siddharth is as natural as natural can be. He is superb. Aditya Pancholi looks noxious and enacts his part just too wonderfully. Anupam Kher does an okay job, partly because his character is not well-defined. Padma Priya looks confident. Ankur Vikal does very well. Seema Biswas gets into the skin of the character. Vidya Malvade doesn't get much scope. Anoop Soni is perfect. The actress playing Noorie is passable. On the whole, Striker lacks a solid script to strike a chord.

Asal Tamil Movie Review

Written by Gobi on at 2:36 AM

Cast : Ajith Kumar, Sameera Reddy, Bhavana, Sampath, Prabhu

Direction: Saran

Music: Bharadwaj

Production: Sivaji Productions

Asal is Ajith's 49th film. Its of course a much awaited movie by the Ajith fans. This movie has brought back the old team Ajith and Saran. Also Ajith is the Assistant director of the film. He is also credited for the story, screenplay and dialogues along with Saran and Yuhi Sethu. Sohe has an extra responsibility for the good going of the film.

Asal is a story of riot between three brothers over a property. Two of the brothers (Sampath Kumar and Rajeev Krishna) are constantly fighting for the wealth and the property while the other brother keeps aside and tries to stop the family getting split. The feud existed there in the family right from the father's time and is still continuing even after the death of the father. Both the good son and father's role is played by Ajith. The wealth seems to much for the brothers to handle and they land in trouble. So Ajith comes for their rescue. The rest deals with the climax. For more see the movie Asal.

Sameera Reddy is the heroine in the film. She has no scope of performance in the film but she has enacted her role very well. Bhavana looks pretty in the movie. Ajith as usual is looking glamorous and handsome in the film. Even Sampath, Rajeev and Pradeep has done their roles of villains very well. As far as the story is concerned there is nothing much extra ordinary in it and sometimes it pricks that the cast , especially Ajith is given a priority than the script. Yuhi Sethu tries hard to provide a few comic moments, succeeding partially on the rare occasion; his side kicks trying hard with a few gimmicks as well. Prabhu shows a dignified presence. The only thing to say that its the presence of Ajith in his stylish costumes and accessories that stop one from getting bored.

Technically speaking the shots in France is quite appreciable. The camera has done a wonderful job. The streets and other beautiful sceneries of France is beautifully impressed. Action scenes are not that pleasing and could have been made better. The music by Bharadwaj gives hardly any feelings.

All in all the movie Asal, produced by Sivaji Productions can be categorized as a stylish movie by Ajith. Altogether Ajith has impressed his fans but director Saran disappointed again. The movie is visually pleasing and one can enjoy his time seeing the movie. Don't think too much. Just watch the movie.

Shahrukh wont apologise to Shiv Sena

Written by Gobi on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 6:35 AM

The Shahrukh Khan- Shiv Sena war of words is showing no signs of ending. The Bollywood superstar has refused to apologise for his comments where he backed the Pakistani players for the third season of the IPL. Addressing a press conference in London on Wednesday, King Khan said that he believed in what he said and there was no reason why he should apologise to anybody.

Shahrukh said "I would not apologise. I said what I believe in as an Indian. I haven't said anything personally against anyone. I would apologise to my director, co-stars, business partners if because of me, the film is affected. It's really sad, makes me rethink. I have apologised in the past if my film has caused offence - to hairstylists for Barber. But here, what am I supposed to apologise for? It's just very sad,"

The My Name Is Khan actor added "I think what I said is true of any person from any nation from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, America, England. That's how I think we've all been brought up. You say 'ok, my country is nice, I'm very proud of it, I'm very proud to have been born there and I wish a lot of people come to my country and participate in the goodness of my country.' If that is wrong then I think I need to re-look at what my children are studying right now. I need to even ask people who think the statement is wrong."

Mani Ratnam to direct Silambarasan

Written by Gobi on at 5:15 AM

Actor Silambarasan seems to be going through a successful phase now. The young actor, of late, seems to have been receiving great offers from maverick filmmakers of Tamil film industry. Though there is a buzz that Simbhu has walked out of K.V. Anand’s Ko, he’s reported to have been completely bowled over by the offer of Mani Ratnam

It seems that the veteran filmmaker has approached Silambarasan to perform the lead role in his next project slated to take off by November. Probably, it is expected to be a bilingual film featuring a hot and happening actor of B-town in lead role for the Hindi version. When approached the spokesperson of Silambarasan, he remained tightlipped mentioning that nothing has been officially confirmed till the moment.

Meanwhile, Simbhu is curiously awaiting the release of his upcoming film Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya slated to hit screens on Feb 19. With Udhayanidhi Stalin of Red Giant Movies acquiring the film’s rights, he has been marketing this film across his satellite channel networks thereby publicizing the film to a bigger audience.

A R Rahman soars high with two Grammy Awards

Written by Gobi on Monday, February 1, 2010 at 4:16 AM

A R Rahman has shown the world that he can do the impossible with his music. He is the first Bollywood music composer to win two Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday. Until then the Recording Academy used to only acknowledge and honor Indian Classical Musicians. For several decades none of the Bollywood music composers were able to attain such a feat.

Luckily A R Rahman got the opportunity work on for the international project like Slumdog Millionaire which gave him the scope to prove his talent to the entire world. At the prestigious award in Los Angeles he won for the best film song and best soundtrack for his compositions for Slumdog Millionaire. “This is insane, god is great again,” Rahman said as he accepted as he accepted his award.

The latest achievement is an add on to the international acclaims he received last year for his composition Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire; he won two Oscars, a Bafta and a Golden Globe last year. Rahman beat tough contenders like Bruce Springteen in the best song category and Quentin Tarantino for Inglorious Basterds on the best sound track category. This year again he is up for Oscar’s nomination for his Tamil song NaNa from the Hollywood film, Couples Retreat.
